Google Review Extortion: What to Save and How to Report It

Business professional documenting messages and organizing supporting records.

Guidance checked on 17 September 2026.

A demand for payment to remove negative reviews needs a different response from an unhappy customer's complaint. The immediate task is to preserve what happened and route the evidence correctly. Avoid turning a stressful situation into a public argument or an unsupported accusation.

1. Identify the demand, not just the low rating

Google's dedicated extortion channel is for direct demands for money or favors in exchange for review removal. Its guidance says not to engage with or pay the people making those demands, and to collect evidence promptly. [1]

A cluster of low ratings alone does not establish extortion. In your notes, distinguish the message you received, the reviews you observed and any connection you can actually support. Do not assume that every recent reviewer is involved.

2. Preserve the message and its context

Save the communications showing the demand, with dates, times and sender details where available. Google also asks for suspicious review links and a timeline of the reviews and the demand. [1]

Keep original files in a restricted incident folder. Use readable filenames and a short index so a colleague can find the relevant material without searching through unrelated customer records. A simple internal note can use these fields:

Time observed | Channel | What the message demanded | Related review link | Evidence filename | Confirmed facts and open questions

This is a suggested record format, not a real incident. Preserve the context around a demand rather than cropping it into a misleading fragment. Share relevant evidence through the reporting route, not in a public review reply. Never invent a missing detail.

3. Collect direct links to the reviews

Google's help page explains how to copy a review link: find the business in Google Maps, open Reviews, choose More beside the review, then Share review. Select Send a link and copy the link shown. [2]

4. Use the reporting channel that fits

Open the merchant extortion form through Google's official help page. Provide the requested business and contact details, explain the demand and attach the evidence. Google says it investigates submitted reports and notifies the reporter of the results. [1]

If there is no direct extortion demand, use the ordinary reporting process for a review you believe violates a specific policy. Google says disagreement or dislike alone is not a reason to report a review for removal. [3]

Before submitting

  • Have you preserved the actual demand and its context?
  • Do the review links point to the specific reviews you describe?
  • Does the timeline separate observations from assumptions?
  • Does the chosen reporting route match the evidence?

After submission, keep a copy of the material and any confirmation you receive. Assign one person to track follow-up and record new relevant information. A report is not a promise of removal or a deadline for resolution. Continue handling genuine customer concerns separately and respectfully.
