Google Business Profile Categories: A Practical Selection Checklist
Guidance checked on 5 October 2026.
A customer should be able to understand what your business does before contacting you. Treat a category review as an accuracy check: write down the real activity first, then compare it with the options in your profile.
Start with the main business
Google asks you to choose the most specific available primary category that accurately describes your business. If an exact option is unavailable, choose an appropriate broader one; you cannot invent a custom business category. [1]
Before editing, write a one-sentence description of your main activity. Ask a colleague who handles customer enquiries whether that description matches what customers actually receive. This is a practical preparation step, not a Google requirement.
Keep additional categories focused
Use additional categories only when they describe genuine parts of the business. Google advises against selecting a category for every individual product or service. [1]
Its representation guidelines also say to use as few categories as needed for the core business and not to treat categories as search keywords. Do not borrow categories from a separately operated business at your location. [3]
Practical test: could a customer reasonably expect this type of business when they arrive or contact us?
Keep a short note explaining each choice. If your explanation is only that a phrase attracts searches, revisit the choice rather than adding it automatically.
Put service details in the right place
Eligible businesses can use the services editor for specific offerings, with suggested or custom services and separate description or price details. Custom service names should not include phone numbers, prices or personal information. Business categories still come from Google's available list. [2]
Make one controlled update
Record the existing primary and additional categories, your proposed choices and the reason for the change. Agree who will make the edit so two managers do not overwrite each other.
In your Business Profile, open Edit profile, edit Business category, select the applicable options and save. Adding or editing categories may trigger another verification request. Follow any request shown in the account. [1]
Check after saving
- Reopen the editor and confirm the saved category choices.
- Look at the public profile in Search or Maps and note what customers can see.
- Check service entries for wording that promises something you do not provide.
- Record the change date, responsible person and any pending verification step.
Do not treat a saved category change as proof of a ranking improvement. Keep the record focused on accuracy and customer expectations; avoid repeated speculative changes while trying to understand an outstanding issue.
